SHK Music Presents: Zoë Knight and Hayley Thompson-King at Boston Harbor Distillery
Two of Boston's most compelling singers are coming to our intimate Dorchester refuge. These two Berklee faculty members and classically trained singer songwriters have developed their craft in intriguingly different ways. Both are bringing us their excellent bands and original music for what will be an unusually entertaining evening.
Zoë Knight is a Boston-based singer & music educator. She has been composing & performing original music for over twenty years. A classically trained soprano raised on classic rock, her performance career began with leading original hard rock & metal bands in NYC and Boston for ten years before attending Berklee, where she earned her degree in Music Education and now teaches.
An old school soul and R&B belter, Zoë might remind you of Aretha Franklin, or even Janis Joplin. Steve Morse, Boston Globe music critic, describes her as having. "a uniquely electrifying voice that moves easily from soul-jazz to funk-rock to mystical." - Zoë's musical style blends her love of soul, jazz, R&B, gospel, funk, and blues with her passion for improvisation and getting down on the dance floor.
She has performed with many bands includingThe Skatalites, the BT/ALC Big Band, Booty Vortex and recently at the Distillery with Club d'Elf. Zoë is returning to our stage armed with her powerful vocal range, keyboard skills, groove-laden songwriting and backed by her collective of monster players known as Mythical Beasts for what will undoubtedly be another wonderful show.
Hayley Thompson-King is an American mezzo-soprano, songwriter, and teaching artist. A classically trained vocalist with a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory, her work has been praised as an “explosive display of vocal prowess” (PopMatters), “a voice that can do anything” (AmericanaUK), and a “jaw-dropping exposition that celebrates the entire cannon of rock and roll’s energy” (Paste Magazine).
Her debut solo album, Psychotic Melancholia, was lauded as “a jaw-dropping exposition that celebrates the entire cannon of rock and roll’s energy.” Her latest album, Sororicide, was produced by world renowned Sean Slade and features the rhythm section from legendary Boston group Human Sexual Response, along with Slade on organ and guitarist Pete Weiss. The album was praised as being as “fuzzy as Memphis rock, scuzzy as L.A. punk...”
She has toured internationally, appearing on bills with Jason Isbell, Andrew WK, Hurray for The Riff Raff, Frank Turner, and Jimmy Dale Gilmore and Dave Alvin among others. Her music has been heard in multiple films and television shows. In addition to performing, Hayley is also a voice teacher at both Berklee and the Longy School of Music of Bard College.
