SHK Music Presents: The Smack Dabs, Le Prestige at Warehouse XI
We are excited to present two GREAT bands bringing a spectacular dance party to Warehouse XI on Thursday April 11! Kicking off the evening at 7:30 will be Robin Mailhot and Marlee Chong, a wonderful pair of dance instructors who will teach the audience some basic swing dance moves.
The Smack Dabs specialize in good-time Swing Blues music from the 1930s, featuring the songs of Tampa Red, Big Bill Broonzy, The Harlem Hamfats, and many others.
Nobody else around recreates this delightful and timeless genre in the way this talented ensemble does. The band’s sound features a rich variety of musical styles, ranging from mournful blues to joyful celebrations, setting the stage for incredible solo and group improvisations and delighting listening audiences and dancers alike.
The Smack Dabs feature some of Boston's most compelling improvising musicians including Mark Earley on guitar, vocals & kazoo, Mark Berney on cornet, Kit Buckley on sax & clarinet, David Sparr on piano, Jim Gray on upright bass, and Rob Rudin on percussion.
Daniel Gewertz of The ArtsFuse describes them as “joyous” “rowdy yet disciplined” “jubilant sound of surprise” “danceable jazz”. -
Le Prestige operates in a different musical zone but are equally compelling and danceable. They are an all-instrumental groove band whose original music bridges 60's soul-jazz with 90's hip-hop and also includes a few reggae/dub tunes. Their live repertoire always features a few choice covers, "Wichita Lineman" being a prime example.
Le Prestige are Chris Forkey on bass, John Glenshaw on drums, Kit Buckley on tenor sax, Scott Getchell on trumpet, David Johnston on guitar, Michael McLaughlin on accordion and special guest Dana Colley (Morphine) on baritone sax.
Warehouse XI is a fun, informal event space located in Union Square with a mix of standing room and seating with plenty of space to dance and move around. It has a wine and beer (and more) bar and while no food is served, there are many great places a few steps away to eat at before or after the show or to pick up stuff to bring in with you (our fav is Wade's BBQ!).
