SHK Music Presents: Tuomo & Markus featuring Verneri Pohjola - Music For Roads
When David Fricke (Rolling Stone Magazine/Mojo/Sirius FM) described Tuomo & Markus' sophomore album, Game Changing (2023), as "the sound of psychedelic Helsinki blowing through L.A.'s Laurel Canyon," he was certainly onto something.
Just before the pandemic, acclaimed Finnish jazz musician/singer/songwriter Tuomo Prättälä and guitarist/singer/songwriter Markus Nordenstreng found themselves recording their psychedelic anthems at Jonathan Wilson's studio in Los Angeles. After returning back home to Helsinki, they added Finnish jazz trumpet sensation Verneri Pohjola - the son of Pekka Pohjola from the legendary Finnish prog rock band Wigwam - into the mix and came up with a unique hybrid of psychedelic indie-folk shaking hands with organic Nordic jazz. With help from their rhythm section (drummers Juho Viljanen & Jaska Lukkarinen, bass player Jeremias Ijäs, and steel guitarist Miikka 'McGyver' Paatelainen), Tuomo & Markus feat. Verneri Pohjola returned to the studio to capture an all-instrumental album titled Music For Roads (due 2024). NYC guitar legend Marc Ribot dropped by their recording sessions, along with French saxophone player/composer Sylvain Rifflet. The music turned into a cinematic, immersive soundscape - somewhat like a musical road trip to the heart of America. American landscape, history, Americana culture, and the current political turmoil created a common thread. As if this isn't enough, Tuomo & Markus have also found time to record retro soul 7" vinyl singles for Timmion Records/Secretly Canadian as Pratt & Moody. They have influential fans these days, including Elton John who's been spinning Pratt & Moody's most recent single and raving about them on his Rocket Hour radio show.
