SHK Presents: BV70. A Birthday Bash for Bob Voges featuring Abbie Barrett, Stars Like Ours, and Sapling at Warehouse XI
Bob is turning 70 and wants to celebrate with a rocking show!
Abbie Barrett has been a vital force in the Boston music scene for over fifteen years, celebrated for her extraordinary vocal talent and exceptional songwriting skills. Her latest album, I Will Let You Know, released on Rum Bar Records, showcases her versatile artistry, blending new wave pop influences with a modern rock edge. Backed by top-tier Boston musicians—Mike Oram on guitar, Ed Valauskas on bass, and Rice Edmonston on drums—Barrett's music transcends genre, offering a dynamic listening experience. The album, which features singles released between 2018 and last year, includes standout tracks like the title track with Greg Hawkes' keyboard work, "Better Machine," and a unique cover of Steely Dan's "Dirty Work."
Barrett's work goes beyond local acclaim, marking her as one of the most talented singers and songwriters in contemporary indie rock. Her back catalog, accessible on Bandcamp and Spotify, is a testament to her enduring appeal and musical evolution. I Will Let You Know serves as a perfect introduction to her music, delivering a blend of introspective tracks like "The Light" with frog trills as percussion, and powerful anthems like "Here To Stay," the reimagined opener from her 2014 album, The Triples. This release underscores Barrett's place in the indie rock pantheon.
Stars Like Ours - In your face guitar hooks, sing along choruses, and a penchant for writing 90's alt-rock anthems deeply rooted in Boston Garage Punk, Stars Like Ours deliver their eponymous self titled full length release. Stars Like Ours is a 3 piece, 90's influenced, driving rock band with pop sensibility from Boston, MA, whos influences include: Sugar, The Amps, Superchunk, Dinosaur Jr., and The Breeders. The band consists of Michelle Paulhus (The Decals, The Marvels, The Real Kids, The Dents, and Andrea Gillis Band) on bass and lead vocals, Kristin Holliday (DRAGO, The Blue Bloods, Full Body Anchor, and The Downhauls) on guitar and backing vocals and Rice Edmonston (Darkbuster, Big Wig, Senior Happy, Heidi, Linus, Full Body Anchor, Mill Pond Falls, and Abbie Barrett Band) on drums and backing vocals.
Sapling - Once declared “the best band in America” by a heavily inebriated gentleman at a pub gig, Sapling is New England’s premier bitchpop and art rock band. Their live show has drawn comparisons to Sleater-Kinney, Roxy Music, and Swans, surely due to their signature blending of pop hooks and confetti with spooky chaos and precariously complex signal chains. Sapling have delighted and confused audiences equally at intimate basement shows and larger venues such as The Sinclair (Cambridge, MA) and Higher Ground (Burlington, VT).
Sapling have released two full-length studio records (2020’s No Sequoia and 2023’s amor fati), both of which have seen them nominated for multiple Worcester and Boston Music Awards and landed them on a number of notable end-of-year favorites lists (Worcester Magazine, Boston Emissions, Bumblebee Radio, If It’s Too Loud, et al.).
Sapling’s current lineup formed in 2018 and features Rainy Maple Sugar Candy on bass, vocals, and extraneous woodwinds; Amber ToiletFire Tortorelli on guitar, vocals, Theremin, and whatever’s in the clown box; and Jonny Spaghetti Cordaro on drums and merriment. At present, the band is based between Providence, RI and Worcester, MA.
We at SHK Music are very excited to begin a relationship with Warehouse XI and site owner, Peggy. It is a really cool event space located in Union Square - a mix of standing room and seating with plenty of room to dance and move around. It has a wine and beer (and sometimes more) bar and while no food is served, there are many great places to grab something a few steps away,
