Which Side?: A Protest Music Teach-Out at Opera + Community Studios
Which Side?: A Protest Music Teach-Out is a concert and discussion series celebrating and exploring protest music.
The event uses James Sullivan’s book, Which Side Are You On?: 20th Century American History in 100 Protest Songs, as a starting point for the presentation of songs that ask listeners to consider how music gives voice to resistance, advocacy, and change. While the series will anchor itself to the book, collaborators will also contribute 21st-century music, both originals and covers.
The show is scheduled to begin promptly at 8 p.m.
- Spots can be reserved, but a reservation does not guarantee entry unless you are in the room by 7:30 p.m.
- If there are people waiting for entry, reservations will be released starting at that time.
This series is produced by Joyce Linehan, Jon Lupfer, and James Sullivan, with the help of many generous friends.
Our July 21 One-Year Anniversary show features The OG’s, Brandie Blaze, The Rubin Brothers, Todd Thibaud, Melissa Ferrick, and Elisa Birdseye.
They will be backed by the Which Side house band, The Paid Protesters. The 90-minute show will also feature commentary by various interesting people.
Admission is pay-what-you-want, with a minimum of $5 (+ processing fees). All proceeds go to the musicians and other direct expenses. Please keep this in mind while picking a price.
Thanks to those who always pay a little bit more, so those who can’t afford as much can have access as well. Your generosity is very much appreciated.
LOCATION
Our very special show is in a very special place: Opera + Community Studios, 15 Channel Center Street in the Fort Point neighborhood of Boston. We are grateful to Boston Lyric Opera for letting us use it.
TIMING
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show begins at 8 p.m. We anticipate the running time will be about 100 minutes.
PARKING
There is some non-resident street parking around the venue. Please note the signage to avoid tickets. Meters end at 6 p.m. There is also a nearby parking garage with discounted parking. To access that discount, please use this link.

We’re building a photo booth of sorts, where you can wave the protest banner and have your photo taken. Open from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
BE PART OF HISTORY - WHO ARE WE
Regular WSAYO photographer Mike Ritter is working on a project and you can be part of it. Mike will be on site, shooting for Who Are We?, a project in which he will create a visual flag out of 250 portraits. He’d love you to be one of the 250. Mike will be set up between 6:30 and 8 p.m. at the venue. Open from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
